Biography of Prof ARM Essop

Professor Essop is our Specialist Prosthodontist at Big Red Tooth Centre for Advanced Oral Health Excellence.

Background:

Prof Essop was the first person of colour to be trained as a Prosthodontist at Wits Dental School under the guidance and tutelage of late Prof. JC Slabbert and late Prof. Arthur Lewin. He subsequently specialised being one of the first person of colour in the country as a prosthodontist. Prof. Essop was associated with the following academic institutes viz. Wits Dental School where he was a specialist consultant and subsequently the Head / Dean of the school and CEO of Wits Dental Hospital, a position he held till he retired., Subsequently he joined the Medunsa Oral Health Centre (University of Limpopo) where he served as specialist consultant.

Prof Essop was also the Acting Head of department of Pedodontics and Restorative Dentistry, School of Oral Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. Prior to his appointment at Wits Dental School, he was the head of the department of prosthodontics and the clinical dean at Medunsa Oral health centre.

Teaching, Training and Research:

During his tenure at the academic institutes, viz. Wits Dental School and Medunsa Oral Health Centre he trained many undergraduates and postgraduate students who are now providing much needed oral health care in the private, public and academic sectors, nationally and internationally. He fondly remembers his students who have achieved accolades and many of whom are currently heading specialist departments at national and international institutes, some have also received their professorial status at these institutes. They make him proud.

He also supervised and authored research dissertations and publications in local and international journals, including, Co-author of “Quality assurance, benchmarking, assessment and mutual international recognition of qualifications” European Journal of Dental Education; February 2008; vol; 92-100.

Prof Essop was also an examiner for both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Wits Dental School, University of Western Cape, University of Pretoria and  Medunsa Oral Health Centre (University of Limpopo).

Executive Duties:

During his tenure at the academic institutes, he served on many university, provincial and national health committees. He was also the national coordinator for oral health Uniform Patient Fee Structure.

Experience:

Prof. Essop has 47 years of Experience in oral health care of which 37 years and counting is, as a specialist prosthodontist.

Contribution to Big Red Tooth:

Prof. Essop recently joined the Big Red Tooth Centre for Advanced Oral Health Excellence as a specialist prosthodontist. His specialist  input, guidance and mentoring within Big Red Tooth is unique and possibly the first in Gauteng if not the country. Both the patients and the clinicians gain immensely from his theoretical and clinical expertise and mentoring. He prides on providing reversible options and or solutions (interim and long term) with respect to oral health care and treatment. He only recommends extensive and invasive procedures “when all else fails”. Patients are guaranteed a thorough examination and information regarding their oral health status prior to any proposed treatment. His years of experience and expertise brings to Big Red Tooth Centre for Advanced Oral Health Care a unique dimension in treatment and  oral care.  The staff at the centre have a combined experience of more than 100 years which guarantees you the best, ensuring globally accepted “Gold Standard” in oral health care.

Recreation:

Outside of his professional life  Prof. Essop loves sports. Having played competitive soccer, hockey, squash, swimming and athletics, he currently participates in these sports at a social level and enjoys an occasional game of golf  (let’s not mention the handicap?  except to say, unlike his treatment options, the balls are never on the “straight and narrow”).
